Every Person Has A Story

(Affirmation: Every Person Has A Story)

Every person has a story.

What are some of the things that come to mind as you think about that phrase? How might it help you in your view of others? How might you change the way you act towards others if you embrace this thought? Why is it important for you to remember that every person has a story? What thoughts come to mind about your own life? How does this thought apply to you and the experiences that you have had?

When we consider this phrase, we are reminded that each, individual person has their own life stories. Everyone has experienced difficult times. It is a reminder that we do not always know what another person has been through.

Likewise, it reminds us that we are the hero in our own life story. We have had experiences that were hard, where we at times wondered where God was, and experiences where we saw His light shining through the darkness, bringing hope, joy and peace into our lives.

Let’s dive a little more into 4 ways that every person has a story:

There Is A Hero

Every person is the hero in their own story. Take a moment and think about your life. Just as in the stories you love, you have gone through what is called a character arc. You have learned and grown and become a person different from the child that you once were, though still similar, still you, in some ways.

The same is true with every person you meet. They have character arcs as well, strengths that they are in the process of discovering and weaknesses that they are seeking to improve. This idea that every person has a story is a reminder that we are all learning on this path of life. We have our weaknesses and our strengths. We are learning to discover them and use them for the good of ourselves and others.

Resistance

In the best stories there is always a struggle of some kind or another. As a child I dreamed of being a princess in a fairy tale, yet I also did not think about how the most exciting things about fairy tales were also the scariest or hardest moments in the hero’s life. Every story has a sense of heartache and adventure. There is always opposition for the hero, because without it, how would they learn, how would they grow?

As difficult as it may be at times, the same is true for us. We will not grow if we do not experience opposition. We will not know what we are capable of if we never step outside our comfort zone. Sometimes we are thrust into unfamiliar and difficult situations, at other times we are intentionally taking small, yet consistent steps outside our comfort zone. Doing so helps us to find greater purpose and to see that we are capable of so much more than we often realize.

In turn, embracing this idea that we are all living our own adventure, reminds us that others are also struggling. Others are also going through difficult time of opposition and despair. This thought helps us to support them in their small, consistent steps through their own path.

Hope

There is hope in stories. That hope is what keeps us going, we have hope that our heroes will accomplish their task. Our heroes, in the midst of despair, in some way or another, see a ray of hope, and because of that they rise above in order to conquer the darkness.

Even in the dark times in our lives, there is still hope. Unfortunately, we don’t always see it. But God is still there, still reaching out to guide us. Keep taking those small steps towards him and you’ll begin to see, He is still there and has been there supporting you through it all.

Sometimes we are the way that God supports others. At times He guides us to small acts of kindness towards others that is just what they needed. Seek for those opportunities to reach out to others, to bring them hope.

Purpose

I strongly believe that every one has a purpose on this earth. For some, it may be easier to see, or maybe it’s just easier to see when looking from an outside perspective. When we are in the midst of our own story, we can lose perspective of what we are going through, we can at times fall into the depths of the grief and pain. But that does not change that there is a purpose to life, and not just a purpose to life but a purpose to your life. You have so much potential, believe in it, embrace it, and then you’ll start to see yourself thrive.

I once heard Cathy Heller say, “The opposite of depression is not happiness, the opposite of depression is purpose.” That struck me so much that I paused what ever I was doing and sent a text message to my mom who is a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist. She responded telling me that that sounds true to her.

Find your purpose, dig deep into your why (motivation) behind doing it, and you’ll then find greater joy, peace, and fulfillment in your life.

In stories, it is when the hero finds their purpose that they start to overcome their inner challenges. When we apply this idea that every person has a story, we can start to seek our own purpose, and help others to find their purpose as well.

Life at times may be an endless adventure, filled with mountains to climb and darkness to fight, yet the amazing thing about it is that all of our stories intertwine. While we are the hero in our own story, we are also the guides, the friends, the not so random act of kindness that lifts another, and/or the ray of light that is exactly what the other person needs. The amazing thing about this thought of, “Every person has a story,” is that we are all in this life together.
