I Am Exactly Who My Family Needs
(Affirmation: I Am Exactly Who My Family Needs)
At time self-doubt creeps in, stunting your progress and keeping you from realizing the impact that you are having. It keeps you from seeing that you are exactly who your family needs. You are enough as you are. Yes, you still have more to learn and ways that you can grow. We all do. Yet, right now you have the ability to learn, right now you already have strengths within you that will allow you to serve and bless your family in the ways that only you can. You are uniquely you and your family is unique as well. The Lord has a plan for you and as you trust in Him, He will lead you and guide you to do what’s best for your family.
I have a daughter who is extremely reserved and really struggles with anxiety. Sometimes I wonder if I do enough for her, if I am helping her in the ways that I need to. The thought of, “I am exactly who my family needs,” or in this case, “I am exactly who my daughter needs,” reminds me that I know her, I also know what it’s like to struggle with anxiety, and I know what it’s like to be as reserved as she is, because I was so much like her at her age. That understanding reminds me that I am enough and exactly who she needs.
Self-doubt keeps you from seeing the strength within you. It keeps you from seeing the ways that you can bless the lives of those who matter most to you. And it can keep you from moving forward in the personal development that you feel would benefit those that you love the most. You are capable and working through that self-doubt is worth the effort so that you can show up in the ways that you want for those you love. That self-doubt keeps you from seeing that you are already exactly who your family needs.
Today I want to share with you the process of working through your self-doubt.
1. Be Open to Change
In order to move forward in conquering self-doubt, you must first desire to do so. I know that this may seem obvious, but oftentimes there are unconscious thoughts and feelings that hold you back from even desiring to move forward. They keep that seed of faith within you from growing.
In Alma 32, Alma teaches the Zoramites that in order to have faith they must first plant a seed of faith within them. From there, they need to nourish that seed, allowing it to grow. The same is true with your belief in yourself. If you want to change, you first need to allow that seed of wanting to change grow within you. To do this, take a look at the thoughts that are in your mind concerning your self-doubt. I find it extremely useful to talk it through with a life coach or to do a brain dump where you just start writing about it, not holding anything back, and allow your thoughts to flow through you onto the paper. Having the words out, whether spoken or written, will help you to move forward in understanding what is really going on in your mind. From there you can intentionally add more positive thoughts, guiding you to nourishing your desire to change.
This is extremely important because if you are not open to changing, you will not progress. You won’t. You will consistently find reasons to keep you from moving forward. You will consistently, although unintentionally, keep yourself from living the way you truly want to live. There is no way to change if you do not want to change.
2. Determine Where You Want to Be and Why
Once you plant that desire to change within you. It is time to nourish that desire. Take time to imagine where you want to be. What kind of person do you want to be in your family? What ways are you already there? What ways could you improve? What do you see as you think about the strengths you have and the ways you would like to show up for your family? What do you hear, both internally and externally? And what do you feel?
I want to encourage you to write what you envision down. You could even create a vision board to remind you often of what you’re trying to achieve. And to raise the necessity of accomplishing what you want, ask yourself why you want this. Again, write your answers. Create a list of all the reasons why you want to accomplish your vision. Doing so helps to train your brain to see the importance of why you need to move forward.
3. What Holds You Back?
During this process there will be thoughts and feelings that come up that might try to convince you that you do not have what it takes to accomplish your desires. These thoughts may try to convince you that you are not good enough. But you are, and you’re going to work through that. So, after going through the above steps, take the time to better understand these thoughts and feelings that are trying to keep you from moving forward. Ignoring them will not help, they’ll still be there and it will be a constant battle, for you if you do not acknowledge their presence. So, take time to write down the things and thoughts that are holding you back.
4. Brainstorm
Now that you have a clearer idea of what’s keeping you from seeing that you are who your family needs, brainstorm things that you can do to prove to yourself that you are who your family needs. Sometimes it’s a matter of changing your thoughts from “I’m not enough because…” to “I am enough because…” or it could be “I don’t know how to…” to “I can and I am willing to learn…”
But don’t stop there in the brainstorming, give yourself a few minutes to just let your thoughts flow. Write down whatever comes to your mind without judgment.
5. Take Action
Consistently taking action on the things that you came up with in the brainstorming step will help you to believe in yourself more and more. You’ll find that the self-doubt that held you back from being exactly who your family needs, will have less and less power over you. You will come to step into who you truly are within and in doing so, your light will shine brighter.
