How to Leave Someone Better Than You Found Them

(Affirmation: I Am Someone Who Leaves People Better Than When I Found Them)

How would this idea of leaving people better than you found them change you? How would it change your interactions with others? Would you treat others kindlier? Would you go out of the way to say something nice, a compliment or words of encouragement?

You might already be someone who does not put others down. This affirmation will help you to deepen your connection with others. Instead of just passing someone as you walk past, you keep your head up, look them in the eye, and smile. Or maybe instead of looking at your phone while waiting in line, you seek for things to say to those in line with you.

In the October 2020 General Conference of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sister Michelle D Craig, talked about having the eyes to see. She shared an experience where she felt prompted to not look at her phone while waiting in line. The next day she found herself standing in line, she followed that prompting and as a result had a conversation with a man who was also standing in line with her. By the end of the conversation, the man felt both seen and heard. All because she was willing to start up a conversation with him.

As someone who struggles with anxiety, doing something like this is nerve wracking. My heart rate goes up and I fidget quite a bit. For me, looking at someone and smiling at them was a huge step outside my comfort zone. However, the more that I did it, the friendlier others were to me and the more connected I felt to them. Over time we would talk more. It doesn’t take much to brighten someone’s day. Begin by taking small steps forward and if bigger opportunities present themselves then go for it.

I Am Someone Who Leaves People Better Than When I Found Them

Here’s how to start embracing this affirmation of, “I am someone who leaves people better than when I found them:”

Specific Person

To start, think of a specific person with whom you would like your relationship improve. Having a specific person in mind will help you to visualize the interaction a bit better but also it helps you to brainstorm different things that you can do for them. Perhaps the person that comes to mind are your kids or maybe your spouse. You could also focus on an acquaintance, someone that you’ve only met a couple of times and know that you’ll meet again. Think about some of the things that you might know about them. What are some of the things that that person likes to do? What are some of their interests? What are some things that you have in common with them? What areas in life do you feel that you can learn from them?

Visualize

The next step is to visualize yourself interacting with that person. What are they doing when you start interacting with them? What might you be talking about with that person? How can you help them to feel heard and seen? Is there a compliment that you can give to them? Visualize your interaction in as much detail as possible.

Brainstorm

Hold on to that visualization and ask yourself, what can I do to help this person to feel heard and seen? What are some things that I can do to leave them feeling inspired? How can I help them to feel joy? Write down whatever comes to mind. Then choose 1 or 2 of those things that you came up with and commit yourself to doing them the next time you see the person in mind.

Repeat

Imagine for a moment what would happen if you went through this process each day. Choosing someone each day that you know you’ll come across, visualizing the interaction you might have with them, brainstorming how you can lift them up, and then following through. How would that change your relationships with others?

The things that we do to improve our relationships with others, whether we know them or not, do not need to be extravagant. It is those small and simple things, lending an listening ear, giving a smile or hug, saying a sincere compliment, that can impact someone’s day and help them to feel loved, seen and heard.

Let us commit today to leave others better than when we found them.
